I’ve provided a link to the cover story for you. The article is well written and raises many questions and thoughts for anyone who cares deeply about the vitality of faith communities in our world today. It tells part of the story, but in my opinion not the WHOLE story. We can lament the sad state of affairs but I would ask each and everyone of you this questions, “when was the last time you invited someone to worship?” Seriously, when we see a good movie we tell folks all about it. Haven eaten at a great restaurant we can’t wait to tell our friends and relatives about our new “discovery.” Now, I believe you want to share the good news. My hunch is you and I at times don’t always feel very equipped to do so. But, here’s a way to do it. Just share the words of a great invitation from Psalm 34, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Invite a friend or family member to church this send. Do it by email if your shyness is overwhelming to you. Tell them you’ll sit with them. Better yet, promise to do valet parking for them, or that you can go for coffee afterwards. This Sunday, Easter Sunday is a great day to invite someone. The music will be great. So will the sermon. On the advice of Sue Ann I had prepared for about five weeks with the assistance of a personal trainer. I suppose that is better than working with an impersonal trainer. Anyway, he helped me work on strengthening my core. I told my kids it took me until I was 54 years old to realize or know that I had a core. One year later I am pain-free and training to walk another marathon. Many of our friends and parishioners helped me, helped us go through the whole recovery and recuperation process. Sue Ann shared with me the news that one of our nephews, Aaron Folkening and his wife, Lisa had a baby boy around 4:52pm Chicago time and named him John Michael Folkening. Aaron was able to call his father, John Folkening who is married to my sister Ruth Ann. John was diagnosed with esophageal cancer about five months ago. John was was able to hear the good news about the birth of another grandchild. John then breathed his last breath about twenty minutes later. It’s a grand day to reflect on the whole idea of faith. And by that I mean to really celebrate Peter’s exhortation to “keep walking” no matter what. As you know that’s not such an easy thing to do. For example, sometimes when I am out doing one of my training walks my legs get tired. Or the weather doesn’t seem to be cooperating with my agenda. At times I feel I just don’t have enough time to do what I want to do. So, you know what I’m talking about. It takes faith to get started walking. It maybe even takes more faith to keep walking given the detours, obstacles and impediments along the way. Many of you have written to me about some of the struggles or problems that you’ve encountered in the past or that you are currently experiencing. Despite the severity and intensity of those situations you have continued to walk in faith. It is also the 250th anniversary of the death of Handel (Nate and I made a pilgrimage to his house as well) In all we attended four plays, five worship services and 10 museums. I’d like to say that it was a wonderful time. However, instead of loosing weight this past week, I gained a pound. However, when I saw that I had gained a pound (okay not so bad, just 2.5 ounces per day) I felt sad, a little frustrated and like all of a sudden wanted to go and eat all the things I didn’t eat this past week. Last week, when I wasn’t feeling so certain about my intake and physical activity I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had lost a pound (okay, maybe not so good, just 2.5 ounces per day). But, here’s one of the many things I have learned from doing Weight Watchers for about eight years, it is very important to attend the meetings and weigh in week after week after week. So, what I know and feel is that I am in the process of becoming. Today’s experience was a “snapshot” along the way. The first one is Faith. The second one is Gratitude. I believe it is important to present both of these in tandem today because that is what the season of Advent is all about, namely Faith and Gratitude. It takes Faith to believe that what “cannot be seen” consists of what is “eternal.” Coupled with that notion is the idea to live each day being as full of Gratitude as one can be. I like the positioning of Faith. It also appears that she has something like trumpets on her sleeves. It takes Faith to proclaim and blast out joy in times which don’t always seem joyful. I really like the fact that Gratitude’s halo is a bit uneven. I would imagine there are some of us who would complain that we had an uneven halo. But, not Gratitude. She is grateful for who she is and what she has. When I shared this information with one of my therapist he asked me, “Have you ever seen the movie “Dumb and Dumber?” I laughed and said “yes.” There is a scene in the movie when the character played by Jim Carey keeps pestering a lovely woman to go out with him. She keeps turning him down. Finally he asks her to give him a number, a set of odds by which she would go out with him. She says something like, “Not even one in a million.” Carey’s character smiles and says, “so you’re telling me there’s a chance!” “So you’re telling me there’s a chance” became a mantra of sorts for me. I started my training. At first, I was winded just walking about our block. Hannah Grace and Sue Ann would walk with me. Then I started walking with my friend Aaron Rodzinak.As you can tell by the photo he is much younger than I am (and also more handsome). He willingly accepted the challenge to be my companion and promised me that he would stay with me throughout the marathon.
