- “Believe, be Light, be Love just because
All along you’ve belonged
In this love song
This now, befriend
Come what may, with your heart begin
Believe Be Light Be Love
Every dream that becomes is a star or a sun
Far to far to be real sometimes fading
But it calls you night and day
Longing to be more than behave
Believe be Light Be Love

- The prayer for today says it all,
Almighty God, look with loving mercy on your family,
for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed,
to be given over to the hands of sinners,
and to suffer death on the cross;
who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and forever. Amen

- Psalm 22 is the psalm which provides the framework for the passion narrative of Jesus. This psalm is traditionally read as the altar is stripped at the conclusion of the Maundy Thursday worship.
The congregation watches as the chancel area is "undressed" and hears the words of vulnerability and exposure.

- The recent cover of NEWSWEEK caught my eye. I’ve provided a link to the cover story for you. The article is well written and raises many questions and thoughts for anyone who cares deeply about the vitality of faith communities in our world today. It tells part of the story, but in my opinion not the WHOLE story. We can lament the sad state of affairs but I would ask each and everyone of you this questions, “when was the last time you invited someone to worship?” Seriously, when we see a good movie we tell folks all about it. Haven eaten at a great restaurant we can’t wait to tell our friends and relatives about our new “discovery.” Now, I believe you want to share the good news. My hunch is you and I at times don’t always feel very equipped to do so. But, here’s a way to do it. Just share the words of a great invitation from Psalm 34, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Invite a friend or family member to church this send. Do it by email if your shyness is overwhelming to you. Tell them you’ll sit with them. Better yet, promise to do valet parking for them, or that you can go for coffee afterwards. This Sunday, Easter Sunday is a great day to invite someone. The music will be great. So will the sermon. And best of all they’ll probably get to see the congregation functioning at its best.

- One year ago today I had double knee replacement surgery. On the advice of Sue Ann I had prepared for about five weeks with the assistance of a personal trainer. I suppose that is better than working with an impersonal trainer. Anyway, he helped me work on strengthening my core. I told my kids it took me until I was 54 years old to realize or know that I had a core. One year later I am pain-free and training to walk another marathon. Many of our friends and parishioners helped me, helped us go through the whole recovery and recuperation process. I am grateful for their love, hard work and kindness.

- “I hear You in the gentle wind blowing through the trees
I hear You whisper in my dreams
Only You conceived the starlight that shimmers through the night
Only You can call me home from this life
I know it in my heart to be true
The answer to me is Only You.”
Only You by Peter Mayer and Jim Mayer
The picture on this page is one of my favorites. It was taken in Wadi Rum in Jordan.
The sand reminded me of all the stars and promises of God. I was thinking of Abram and Sarai before they had their names changed by God to be Abraham and Sarah.

- When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples 2and said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. 3If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.'" 4They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, 5some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" 6They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. 7Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,
"Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
10Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!"
11Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

- We are on the cusp of Holy Week. I was telling a friend of mine who doesn’t attend church who had asked about the meaning or importance of Holy Week. My explanation was that it’s Jesus Week in the church year.
We retrace his steps and follow him from the triumphant entry into Jerusalem to the upper room, the cross, the tomb and then the road to Emmaus.
You’ll have the opportunity to follow your way this week through the stations of the cross. Last year on Palm/Passion Sunday we dedicated a set of stations which were lovingly stitched by some fantastic volunteers at our church. Yesterday when I was talking to Peter about the stations of the cross I shared with him that it was my understanding they came about after folks had gone to the holy land. When these pilgrims shared they excitement in following Jesus’ journeys it was decided to attempt to replicate the experience back home. In other words they want to “show and tell” their families, friends and fellow parishioners in order that they too could “follow Jesus.”

- “The face of this world is changing and turning
What are we learning and what is our vision?
We build the walls of strength deep inside us
They must not divide us, become our prison
We bring our differences, our hopes our faith our fears
We’ll build a home for love in this family
For the light that brought us here”

- On this day my thoughts turn to the writings of St. Paul who was anything but a fool.
He wrote these words to the Christians in Corinth: (1 Cor)
18For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written,
"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart."
20Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. 22For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.
