- With a blueprint for living
That calls you back from where you've been
In this house we build a doorway
To send us out and welcome in
There is a river of life all around us
It's our common ground, the gift we are given
Ocean and sky, the wild of the forest,
Were here long before us and meant for all children
We bring our differences, our hopes our faith our fears
We'll build a home for love in this family
For the light that brought us here
Chorus
In this blueprint for living
From the word that touched the earth
Round this house we plant a Garden
God's grace is our rebirth
Lend your voice in celebration
Lend your hand in lifting up
This is the day of creation
Built on the cornerstone of love"

- The gentleman in the picture with the large sailfish was my grandfather, the Rev. W.T. Vogel. As a child growing up in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, my grandmother had a letter opener which was fashioned from the large “sword” of this fish. I couldn’t imagine as a child growing up from what kind of mythic beast the “sword” had come. A few weeks ago when I was going through a filing cabinet in my father’s home office, I came across the picture in an old manila file. There was an accompanying certificate from the West Palm Beach Fishing Club which was dated December 14, 1938. This document “authenticated” that the fish was 6’ 101/2’’ and weighed 40 pounds. I had never ever seen this picture before.

- Last December when I was in London with our son, Nate I happened to see a marvelous picture at the National Gallery. You know, sometimes when you have a religious experience when seeing a work of art or listening to a lovely, harmonious piece. When I saw this particular painting, titled “WINTER LANDSCAPE” by Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) it literally took my breath away and simultaneously inspired me at the same time.
I really encourage you to clink on the link and take a look at this marvelous paiting

- Yesterday around noon time I was sitting in my Weight Watchers meeting. It's something I try to do every week. At times I sit in this meetings and think about the similarities between Weight Watcher meetings and attending corporate worship. First of all, it's very important to "show up." I know when I've tried to"watch my weight" and not attend the meetings, that I don't do so well. I also know (and of course, I'm biased here) that I believe it's key as a child of God to gether together with other children of God to hear the word, pray, give of time, talents and money and to commune with God.
Secondly, some weeks whether it be at Weight Watchers or at church one comes in knowing that it's not been a "good" week. Perhaps it's been too much food or too much sin.(hey, it's that simply and also that complex). Or maybe, not enough physical activity and not enough spiritual activity. As St. Paul wrote, " I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate," (Romans 7:15).
