- 16Faithful friends are life-saving medicine;
and those who fear the Lord will find them. Sirach 6:16
Peter sings, “This now, befriend.”
One of my favorite quotes is the one from the Wisdom of Sirach listed on this page.
An older translation reads, “A good friend is the elixir of life.” Another one translates the words to be, “a faithful friend is the tonic of life.” I think you get the vibe of what the passage is all about; friends put the “bubbly” in one’s life. Friends make one better and even well. Friends are good medicine for whatever ails you and me. Several years ago when our family was in Austria we were asked by a server if we wanted water “mit gasse” (that is carbonated). It was a funny moment and that incident and phrase has become shorthand for whenever we need something to aid digestion (literally and figuratively).
Sue Ann and I met 35 years ago and have been married for almost 33 years. I am now 55 years old, so you can do the math. As I think about the changes and chances in my life I’m most grateful for the love, continuity, stability, creativity and joy that Sue Ann has brought to my life.

- Peter sings, “Believe Be Light Be Love.”
Whenever I go to the National Gallery I feel like I have religious experiences. Walking through the various galleries I am transported to the heights of heaven and also the depths of human existence and doubt. On this particular excursion Nate pointed out to me the work of Joachim Beuckalaer who lived in the 16th Century. In one area of the building there were four large works by him entitled THE FOUR ELEMENTS.
The one I want to show you today has as it’s full title The Four Elements: Water. A Fish Market with the Miraculous Draught of Fishes in the Background.

- “Paper or plastic?” Daily we hear choices and opportunities presented to us. “Left or right?” “In or out?” “Conservative or Liberal?”
Peter graciously reminds us that a choice or decision has already been made about us. He sings, “All along you’ve belonged.” That’s what the Prodigal Son’s older brother heard when he was complaining to his father that nobody had ever given a big BBQ in honor of him. “All along you’ve belonged.” So, that’s a given because of the gifts of a gracious God. Lent is a specific time in the church year to
get that message on the hard drive of our soul, “All along you’ve belonged.”

- “Believe, be Light, be Love just because
All along you’ve belonged
In this love song
This now, befriend
Come what may, with your heart begin
Believe Be Light Be Love
Every dream that becomes is a star or a sun
Far to far to be real sometimes fading
But it calls you night and day
Longing to be more than behave
Believe be Light Be Love" Peter Mayer
Today is the beginning of Lent.
Join us for the journey from
ashes to alleluias.

- Psalm 51 is traditionally understood to be the Psalm which King David wrote after he was
caught up in "Bathshebagate." The Psalm is read or sung on Ash Wednesday which takes place this year on February 25th.
Pastor Ron Glusenkamp reads the text from the Evangelical Lutheran Worship book.
